15 ways to speed up windows 10

Clean out your Registry

Under the Windows hood, the Registry tracks and controls just about everything about the way Windows works and looks. That includes information about where your programs are stored, which DLLs they use and share, what file types should be opened by which program, and just about everything else.

But the Registry is a very messy thing. When you uninstall a program, for example, that program’s settings don’t always get cleaned up in the Registry. So over time, it can get filled with countless outdated settings of all types. And that can lead to system slowdowns.

Don’t even think of trying to clean any of this out yourself. It’s impossible. To do it, you need a Registry Cleaner. There are plenty available, some free and some paid. But there’s really no need to outright buy one, because the free Auslogics Registry Cleaner does a solid job.

Before using Auslogics or any other Registry Cleaner, you should back up your Registry so you can restore it if anything goes wrong. (Auslogics Registry Cleaner does this for you as well, but it can’t hurt to have it backed up twice.) To do your own Registry backup, type regedit.ext in the search box, then press Enter. That runs the Registry editor. From the File menu, select Export. From the screen that appears, make sure to choose the “All” option in the Export range section at the bottom of the screen. Then choose a file location and file name and click Save. To restore the Registry, open the Registry editor, select Import from the File menu, then open the file you saved.

Now download, install and run Auslogics Registry Cleaner. On the left-hand side of the screen you can select the kinds of Registry issues you want to clean up — for example, File Associations, Internet or Fonts. I generally select them all.

Next, tell it to scan the Registry for problems. To do that, click “Scan Now,” and from the drop-down menu that appears, select Scan. That lets you first examine the Registry problems it finds. If you instead choose “Scan and Repair,” it makes the fixes without you checking them.

It now scans your Registry for errors, then shows you what it found. It ranks the errors according to their severity to help you decide which to fix. Click Repair when you’ve made your decision, and make sure that “Back Up Changes” is checked, so you can restore the Registry easily if something goes wrong.

Opening this path causes a BSOD

A Windows 10 bug first discovered by security researcher Walied Assar, and later publicly disclosed by security researcher Jonas Lykkegaard, causes Windows 10 to crash and display a BSOD when a special path is entered into the Chrome address bar.

When developers want to interact with Windows devices directly, they can pass a Win32 device namespace path as an argument to various Windows programming functions. For example, this allows an application to interact directly with a physical disk without going through the file system.

Lykkegaard told BleepingComputer that he discovered the following Win32 device namespace path for the ‘console multiplexer driver’ that he believes is used for ‘kernel / usermode ipc.’  When opening the path in various ways, even from low-privileged users, it would cause Windows 10 to crash.

When connecting to this device, developers are expected to pass along the ‘attach’ extended attribute to communicate with the device properly.

CDCreateKernlConnection showing the ‘attach’ extended attribute

Lykkegaard discovered if you try to connect to the path without passing the attribute due to improper error checking, it will cause an exception that causes a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) crash in Windows 10.

Even worse, low privileged Windows users can attempt to connect to the device using this path, making it easy for any program executed on a computer to crash Windows 10.

In our tests, we have confirmed this bug to be present on Windows 10 version 1709 and later. BleepingComputer was unable to test it in earlier versions.

BleepingComputer reached out to Microsoft last week to learn if they knew of the bug already and if they would fix the bug.

“Microsoft has a customer commitment to investigate reported security issues and we will provide updates for impacted devices as soon as possible,” a Microsoft spokesperson told BleepingComputer.

Windows

  1. bootrec /FixMbr
  2. bootrec /FixBoot
  3. bootrec /ScanOS
  4. bootrec /RebuildBcd

Windows

Refresh Your PC

Creating snapshot”

vssadmin list shadows
mklink /d c:\shadow \\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy2\

Windows 8.

DISM /Capture-Image /?
DISM /Apply-Image /?

DISM.exe /Mount-Wim /WimFile:D:\backup\CustomRefresh.wim /index:1 /MountDir:C:\mount

Windows PE

Windows pc health check setup.msi download and usage guide

  1. Download the PC Health Check app (it’s a Windows Installer package that has around 13MB).
  2. Once downloaded, open up the app and click on the Check Now button.
  3. You’ll either get the This PC can run Windows 11 answer and you will be notified when it becomes available for install, or you’ll keep getting Windows 10 updates.

Furthermore, in case this is the first time you’re using the app, you should know that there are a couple of features inside the app meant to provide health and performance data. By using the PC Health Check app you can also do the following:

-> Quickly Rename your PC-> Backup & Sync (here you’ll get a notification in case you’re not backing up your data)-> Have a quick overview of the Windows Update status-> Storage capacity status-> Startup times details

However, when we checked the app, it seemed quite old, or just not updated. For us, it showed that it was running version 2.1 from 2020.

Update: The app will now say why your PC isn’t ready for Windows 11

Microsoft has indeed updated the PC Health Check app to show more information about why your computer won’t be able to run Windows 11.

This initiative will help with some of the confusion that sprung up around compatibility. If you already downloaded and installed the application, it should auto-update when you start it up again.

The previous version of the tool caused some serious confusion among users, as they didn’t know exactly why their systems weren’t ready for the new OS.

It mainly showed users a fail message with absolutely no details. However, now, you will know the reason why Windows 11 can’t run on your device, so you can make the necessary adjustments.

Update: The new app crashes for many

Microsoft kept its promise and quickly released an update for the PC Health Check app. However, as we discovered, it seems that it crashes for many. We would appreciate it if you’d leave a comment below saying how the app behaves for you.

The sooner Microsoft is aware, the faster they’ll release a new fix.

However, it seems that not everybody finds this tiny app quite useful. Some users are disappointed with the fact that you aren’t really being told what requirements aren’t met.

From the looks of it, it seems that the TPM 2.0 (Trusted Platform Module) could be the biggest trigger of them all, and there’s already some chatter on the web around this.

We will probably have to dig some more and see what are the real implications for consumers because at the moment it seems that although this is a feature aimed at improving security, it does have its .

Update: TPM 2.0 does indeed seem to be an issue

We followed up on Twitter and it seems that this is an increasing issue.

We also saw increased traffic on our article that speaks about this error: Your computer’s trusted platform module has malfunctioned.

So, this could potentially mean that an increasing number of Windows 10 users are testing the app and getting errors that could be linked to the TPM.

If you are one of them too, please help us know more by leaving a comment in the section below.
